Common concepts

This topic explains basic EBS concepts to help you get started with the product.

Concept	Description
Region	The geographic area where a physical data center is located. Intranets across different regions are completely isolated from each other to ensure maximum stability and fault tolerance. EBS supports the following regions: China (Beijing), China (Shanghai), China (Guangzhou), China (Hong Kong), Asia Pacific (Johor), and Asia Pacific (Jakarta).
Availability zone	A physically separate area within a region with independent power and networking.
IOPS	The number of read and write operations processed per second.
Throughput	The amount of data transferred per second.
MBR	The Master Boot Record (MBR) is a partitioning scheme that helps the hard drive locate files, allowing the operating system to read data from the drive. MBR can only recognize partitions smaller than 2 TiB and supports a maximum of 4 partitions.
GPT	The GUID Partition Table (GPT) is a partitioning scheme that helps the hard drive locate files, allowing the operating system to read data from the drive. GPT can recognize partitions of 2 TiB or larger and the number of partitions that can be created is unlimited.
File system	The mechanism used to manage files on a storage device.
UUID	A universally unique identifier.
