Create⧸Edit virtual warehouse
The virtual warehouse (Virtual Warehouse, VW) is the compute resource of ByteHouse. You can create virtual warehouses with specified specs as needed to provide sufficient resources for various data operations. This article introduces how to create and edit a virtual warehouse, as well as how to configure the default virtual warehouse, default write virtual warehouse, and database-level write virtual warehouse.
The following are the functional limitations for virtual warehouse types:
This feature is in Beta. To use it, submit a ticket or contact the ByteHouse team to obtain allowlist privileges.
Please ensure that your ByteHouse engine version is v2.3.1 or above. You can log in to the ByteHouse cloud data warehouse console, click the top Tenant management, and view your engine version on the Basic informationpage.
The load elasticity feature is in Beta. To use it, submit a ticket or contact the ByteHouse team to obtain allowlist privileges.
In the ByteHouse console, click the virtual warehouse tab.
Click the + virtual warehouse button in the upper right corner.
In the Create virtual warehousedialog box, select the payment type and virtual warehouse specs, and set the relevant parameters.
tip
For users who enabled the ByteHouse cloud data warehouse service in May 2024 or later, you need to select the type of virtual warehouse to create at this time.
For users who enabled the ByteHouse cloud data warehouse service in April 2024 or earlier, the virtual warehouse will be automatically created based on the type selected when the service was created.
Parameter items
Parameter description
Specifications
Virtual warehouse specifications. The price of virtual warehouses varies by specification. You can select as needed. You can view the specifications and pricing of the virtual warehouse on the interface, or refer to Compute resources.
Virtual warehouse name
Virtual warehouse name. Customization is supported. The name cannot be changed after creation. Naming rules are as follows:
Start with a lowercase letter.
Consist of lowercase letters and numbers.
Use a single underscore to connect names.
Support up to 31 characters.
Virtual warehouse description
Specific description of the virtual warehouse. You can add a custom description to the virtual warehouse for easier distinction and use later.
Automatic start/suspend
Auto resume: The system enables automatic start by default. After enabling this feature, users do not need to manually start the virtual warehouse. Requests can be sent to the virtual warehouse to invoke resources and perform queries. After automatic startup is enabled, the first query may take longer (10–30 seconds). Please configure according to your business needs.
Auto suspend: Once enabled, if the virtual warehouse is not used within the configured interval, it will be automatically shut down to reduce resource costs.
warning
To set a virtual warehouse as the Default write virtual warehouse for a dedicated Server, you must disable the Automatic start and stop settings of that virtual warehouse.
Virtual warehouse type
The types supported by the virtual warehouse can be configured as OLAP or ELT.
OLAP: Optimized for high concurrency and low latency OLAP queries, supporting complex SQL queries and interactive analysis.
ELT: Suitable for long-running batch processing, applied to bulk data import, cleansing, large-scale offline calculation, and other scenarios. For more information about ELT principles, see ELT development.
Advanced features: Supports enabling advanced features such as full-text query, GIS spatiotemporal analysis, and vector query.
Full Text Search: Allows preprocessing documents and saving indexes for fast future queries. For function details, see full-text search.
GIS: This function refers to high-performance geospatial analysis GIS capability, providing high-performance location data analysis services for location insights, user segmentation, and similar scenarios. For function details, see GIS spatiotemporal analysis.
VectorSearch: Vector query provides management and similarity query functions for vector data, and improves query performance by supporting multiple common approximate nearest neighbor (ANN) algorithms, enabling processing of unstructured data. For function details, see Enable vector search.
Local disk: This function caches cold data from object storage, increasing the probability of hot reads. It is designed for high-performance, high QPS scenarios and improves your query efficiency.
You can enable the local disk function of the virtual warehouse as needed, starting from 100 GB. For specifications and pricing of the virtual warehouse local disk, see Use the virtual warehouse local disk.
Load Elasticity: Load elasticity is the automatic scaling function of the virtual warehouse. It dynamically allocates elastic resources and automatically adjusts specifications based on preset strategies to adapt to business load fluctuation. You can set the load elasticity strategy for the virtual warehouse as needed. The system will automatically scale based on the configured thresholds. For a detailed introduction to load elasticity, see Load elasticity.
warning
Load elasticity is not supported for specifications below L. Before use, ensure that the specification of your virtual warehouse is L or above.
The local disk of the virtual warehouse changes in proportion with the basic Resources of the virtual warehouse. When the virtual warehouse is elastically scaled out, the local disk will be expanded in the same proportion as the elastic Resources. When the virtual warehouse is elastically scaled in, the local disk will delete the cache of the corresponding compute node. The elastic cache expanded will continue to be billed separately in pay-as-you-go mode.
After configuration, click Proceed to order. The system will automatically create and start the virtual warehouse for you. You can view its status in the virtual warehouse list. When the virtual warehouse status is Running, it indicates that creation was successful.
After creation is complete, set the default virtual warehouse resources for the current environment and user to ensure that data operations can be performed normally. For details on how to configure, see Set default write virtual warehouse and User param settings.
Changing the billing method only affects the basic Resources of the virtual warehouse, while the elastic Resources allocated by the load elasticity Function are still billed on a pay-as-you-go basis.
In the virtual warehouse list, click the Edit button in the actions column.
On the edit page, adjust the virtual warehouse specs, description, auto start/suspend, virtual warehouse type, advanced features, virtual warehouse local disk, load elasticity, and other configurations as needed. After adjusting the virtual warehouse specs, intelligent storage, advanced features, or load elasticity, the fees will change and be displayed on the page in real time. Please pay attention to fee changes.
For virtual warehouse specifications, refer to Alarm. In cloud monitoring, you can view the overall resource utilization to determine whether the virtual warehouse specifications need adjustment.
When you disable the elastic resources of the virtual warehouse during editing, the system will wait for the running tasks to finish before disabling the corresponding elastic resources.
After the adjustment is complete, click Confirm. The system will automatically update the configuration. When the status bar in the virtual warehouse list changes from Pending to Running, it indicates that the virtual warehouse configuration adjustment is complete. You can verify whether the adjustment was successful by viewing the specific parameters.
After creating a virtual warehouse, you can view the monitoring metric data of the virtual warehouse on the Tenant management > Cloud monitor page.
For details on the currently supported virtual warehouse monitoring metrics and guidance on creating monitoring alarms in BytePlus Cloud Monitoring, see Alarm.
warning
To view the Monitor details of a virtual warehouse, the User must have the CloudMonitorReadOnlyAccess privilege; to configure Alarm, the User must have the CloudMonitorFullAccess privilege. For detailed Actions, refer to Add privileges for IAM users.
