Upgrade instance specifications
After creating an instance, if your business scale grows and the current instance specifications no longer meet your needs, you can upgrade the instance's computing and storage specifications accordingly. It helps to avoid performance degradation due to resource limitations and ensures normal business running. This topic explains how to upgrade instance specifications in the Message Queue for Kafka console.
Prerequisites
An existing Kafka instance with status Running.
Note
When upgrading instance specifications, pay attention to the following restrictions and risks.
  • Change restrictions:
  • Different computing specifications correspond to different storage capacity ranges. When upgrading the instance's computing specification, the storage capacity must be upgraded synchronously.
  • Pricing varies based on computing specifications and storage capacity. After changing the instance specification, configuration fees will change. Please confirm the related fees in the order.
  • Risk description:
  • Do not perform other operations on the instance during the specification change process. Otherwise, abnormal instance status or other issues may appear.
  • During specification upgrades, server brokers will restart sequentially. We recommend that you perform this operation during off-peak hours.
  • The client may briefly disconnect and then reconnect with some nodes. Errors may occur. Messages that are already sent successfully will not be lost after the upgrade. For messages that fail to send during the upgrade, retry is recommended. A retry mechanism can be configured on the client.
Operation steps
  1. Select a region on the top menu bar.
  1. On the Instances page, locate the specified instance and click Configure in the corresponding Actions column.
  1. Select new instance compute and storage specifications, and set whether to enable rebalancing.
  •
    Configuration
    Description
    Specification type
Specification type of the Kafka instance.
    • High write version (read-write ratio 1:1): The specification ranges from kafka.20xrate.hw to kafka.4000xrate.hw. The peak business read traffic equals the peak business write traffic. It is suitable for scenarios requiring balanced data read and write performance.
    • High read version (read-write ratio 3:1): The specification ranges from kafka.800xrate.hr to kafka.3000xrate.hr. The peak business read traffic is three times the peak business write traffic. It is suitable for scenarios with higher data read performance requirements.
    Computing specifications
Compute specification of the Kafka instance.
    (Optional) Rebalance configuration
Whether to enable the rebalance configuration.
    • Enable Rebalanced configuration: (recommended) The Message Queue for Kafka version will rebalance partition allocation.
    • Disable Rebalanced configuration: If rebalance configuration is not enabled, you need to manually add partitions to the original topic to use the upgraded resources.
    tip
If the page displays set rebalancing section after upgrading, the number of brokers of instance increases. In this case, you are required to set rebalancing. If only upgrading storage specifications is involved, no rebalancing is required.
    (Optional) Rebalance time
If you enable Rebalanced configuration, you need to specify the execution time for the rebalance.
    • Execute immediately: rebalance immediately after successfully upgrading the instance specification.
    • Custom time: perform rebalance at the specified date and time.
    tip
We recommend that you choose off-peak hours, such as nighttime, to perform rebalancing to minimize the impact of data migration on business.
    Storage specifications
Storage specification of the Kafka instance.
    Partition count
Number of partitions for the Kafka instance.
    • Only supports increasing the number of partitions. For the range of partitions supported by each specification, refer to Product specifications.
    • Partitions added when upgrading the instance specification will incur additional partition fees. For partition billing details, please refer to Billing items.

  1. Click Next step.
  1. Confirm the upgraded specifications, read and agree to the related agreement, then click Buy now.
  • The upgrade will take approximately 30 minutes and will not affect overall service availability.
Execution result
On the Instances page, click the name of the upgraded instance.
  • View the upgraded instance configuration on the Instance details tab.
  • View task details of the upgrade specification operation on the Task management tab.
