Resetting consumer offsets
You can reset consumer offsets to consume messages from an earlier time or skip all accumulated messages. This is useful for clearing a backlog or processing offline data. The Message Queue for RocketMQ console allows you to adjust a consumer's current consumption position. You can start consuming from the latest offset or from a specified point in time.
Background information
Message Queue for RocketMQ lets you reset the consumer offset for one topic or all topics to which a group is subscribed. The following reset methods are supported:
  • Start from the latest offset: When the group consumes messages from this topic, it skips the backlogged messages and begins with those sent after the reset. The backlogged messages are not deleted.
  • Start from a specified point in time: Select a point in time from the specified past or future time range. This range is determined by the message retention period of the topic, which is three days by default.
Notes
  • Resetting consumer offsets is not supported in broadcast mode.
  • Resetting consumer offsets does not affect messages that are being retried. Therefore, after you reset consumer offsets, some retry messages may still be delivered.
  • To reset consumer offsets with the RocketMQ Go SDK, use the Go SDK community commit (67ec50b93040567856cdbb32c03d607d8c292c3d) or a more recent one. Earlier versions may result in errors or unexpected behavior. For more information, see Go SDK overview.
  • The Go, Java, and C++ SDKs support resetting consumer offsets when clients are online. For SDKs in other languages, pause the client before resetting the offsets.
