Setting field grouping enables information to be displayed in a collapsed format. This article introduces how to create groups, including grouping by field values, grouping by conditions, and grouping by custom intervals.
Feature overview
When there is a large amount of information and fields need to be grouped for display, groups can be created to enable information collapsing. For dimension and metric fields, the currently supported field grouping methods differ. Details are as follows:
Field type | Supported grouping methods |
|---|
Dimension | Group by field value and group by condition |
Metric | Group by field value, group by condition, and group by custom step size |
Application scenarios
- Merge dimension items of text fields: Divide the field values in the "Country" field into "Europe", "Asia", and so on, generate a new group field "Continent", and then use "Continent" as a dimension for analysis.
- Customize numeric metric data buckets: Divide the selling price into data buckets, such as 0-100, 100-300, 300-500, and view performance across each range.
Quick start
- Select the required grouping field and click [Create group].
- Configure the field name, select the grouping method, set detailed grouping conditions and rules, then click "OK" to confirm.

The following describes the relevant parameter configuration.
Parameter | Configuration description |
|---|
Field name | The default format is "original field name (group)", and users can customize the field name after grouping. |
Grouping method | Includes two grouping methods: "by field value" and "by condition": - Group by field value: Allows users to place field values into a specific group folder via fuzzy search or drag-and-drop.
- Group by condition: Allows users to set one or more AND/OR conditions for string or numeric fields to group them.
|
Automatically merge ungrouped fields | All field values not assigned to a group are merged into a new group, with the default name "Ungrouped". Users can rename this group. |
Save to dataset | If "Save to dataset" is not selected, the added field will be a personal expression field. warning Personal expression fields can be used for data analysis and exploration, but they differ from other fields in the following ways: - When a field is a personal expression field, other users will not see this field when they open the dataset by switching datasets.
- When a chart contains a personal expression, sharing the link with others allows them to query the field, but they cannot modify the field or view the field's expression. At the same time, the field appears grayed out in the dimension or metric bar for other users.
- When a personal expression is referenced, it will be prefixed with "Personal".

Grouping method - group by field values
- Click [Create group] to add a new group, supporting grouping by field values.

- When setting groups, users can group by fuzzy search or by directly dragging and dropping.
- Users can use fuzzy search to filter field values, click [Add to] and select [Group];

- Users can also drag and drop field values into specific group folders.

Grouping method - group by conditions
- Click [Create group] to add a new group, supporting grouping by conditions.

- When setting groups, multiple grouping conditions can be added, and the logical relationships between conditions can be configured.

The parameter configuration is described as follows.
Parameter | Configuration description |
|---|
Add condition | - For string fields, the following operators are supported: contains / does not contain, starts with / ends with, like / not like, is null / is not null, is an empty string / is not an empty string, and more.
- For numeric fields, the following operators are supported: =, ≠, >, ≥, <, ≤, is null / is not null, and more
- For boolean fields, the following operators are supported: =, ≠, is null / is not null, and more.
|
Set the logical relationship between conditions | Set whether the grouping method needs to meet "all conditions" or "any condition". - If set to "all conditions", the conditions must be met with an AND relationship
- If set to "any condition", the conditions must be met with an OR relationship
|
For string types, the explanation of operators is as follows:
Operator | Actual operation |
|---|
Contains | like |
does not contain | not like |
starts with | like |
ends with | not like |
not like | not like |
is empty | is null |
is not empty | is not null |
is an empty string | is empty |
is not an empty string | is not empty |
warning
- When using conditional grouping, ensure that the conditions for each group are mutually exclusive; otherwise, the field value will be assigned to the first group, ensuring that each record belongs to only one group. For example: The condition for group 1 is "contains Jiangsu", and the condition for group 2 is "contains Jiangsu" or "contains Hunan". In this case, a field with the value "Jiangsu" will be assigned to group 1.
Rename group
Double-click or click [Rename] to modify the group name.
- Group by field values interface:

- Group by conditions interface:

Ungroup and delete group
In the group by field value mode, all field values contained within the group are removed from the group, and the removed field values will be in an ungrouped state.

In the group by condition mode, deleting existing groups is supported.

Edit group
To modify the current grouping fields, click "Edit group" for the grouped field in the dimension field list area.
