Billing examples based on pay-by-ingested data mode

This topic introduces the billing examples for pay-by-ingested-data billing mode of Torch Log Service (TLS).

TLS pay-by-ingested-data billing mode charges according to the actual amount of raw log data ingested. It covers multiple billing items including ingest traffic, storage, indexing, and data transformation. It helps users manage costs flexibly based on the actual log ingestion volume, making it suitable for scenarios that require billing by data ingested.

Notice

To simplify calculation, all data is calculated based on a complete billing cycle. Billing case results are for reference only. For details, see the actual bill.

The data conversion rule is 1 TiB = 1024 GiB.

Use cases

Case details

A log topic billed by pay-by-ingested data is created in China 2 (Beijing) region to collect logs from Website A, with 2 TiB (2048 GiB) of uncompressed raw logs ingested daily. Details are as follows:

Write traffic: Calculated based on the original data volume (write traffic is measured by the uncompressed original data volume, which means 2048 GiB is generated daily).

Storage traffic: Calculated based on the compressed data volume. The compression rate is assumed to be 20% (storage is based on the compressed data volume, so 409.6 GiB is generated daily).

Index: Indexing is enabled for all fields (index traffic and index storage are calculated by uncompressed data volume, resulting in 2048 GiB daily).

Billing rules

Case details

The following cases display the daily cost of one log topic at different stages (not the sum of five days). Each use case adds a new feature based on the previous one.

Case 1 Log collection

Website A writes 2 TiB of raw logs in a single day. Data is stored for less than 30 days, with no external network consumption, cross-region data transformation, or basic log shipping performed.

Case 2 Store logs

Based on Case 1, set the log topic storage duration to standard storage for 100 days. The current log topic has been running for 85 days. Today's billable storage will reach standard storage of 22 TiB (compressed) and standard index storage of 110 TiB (uncompressed).

Notice

Billing logic (using only standard storage as an example):

Data must be retained for 30 days before billing starts. If 2 TiB is written daily, data will only enter the billing cycle from day 31. For day n, where n > 30, the calculation is as follows.

Log storage - billable storage = (n − 30) × 2 TiB × 20% (assumed compression rate)

Index storage - billable storage = (n − 30) × 2 TiB

Case 3 Consume logs

Based on Case 2, an external program reads logs via the public domain name, with a total downstream internet traffic of 1.5 TiB.

This will generate additional internet outbound traffic fees based on Case 2.

Notice

External network reads only count toward external traffic and do not consume the 100 TiB consumption quota.

The actual down-link volume is affected by factors including the consumption API, returned content, and may not equal the storage volume.

Case 4 Data transformation log

Based on Case 3, the log topic undergoes cross-region data transformation, processing 10 TiB (uncompressed) and transferring the data to another region. After compression, the actual cross-region transfer is 2 TiB.

After adding this volume, the log topic’s total data transformation for the month still does not exceed the 100 TiB monthly quota. Therefore, the data transformation function itself will not incur charges, but cross-region data transfer traffic is billed in full separately.

Case 5 Log shipping log

Processing, shipping, and consumption can handle historical data and may process the same batch multiple times, so the daily usage is not limited by the day's newly written data.

Based on Case 4, usage for data transformation, log shipping - basic edition, log shipping - advanced edition, and data consumption (intranet) for this log topic has exceeded the monthly free quota. Additional fees have been incurred.

Common misconceptions

Common misconceptions	Correct understanding
All write operations are free for the first 30 days	Billing only applies when logs and indexes are stored for 30 days or less. Original writes, external network reads, and cross-region transfers may still incur costs.
All data will be charged storage fees immediately after the log topic has been created for 30 days	Each batch of data is billed only for the portion exceeding 30 days based on its own storage lifecycle.
A consumption quota of 100 TiB can offset outbound data read traffic	This quota applies solely to intranet consumption. Outernet consumption is billed for the full outbound read traffic and does not use this quota.
