Tag overview
Tags are used to identify and classify cloud resources. Torch log service (TLS) supports adding tags for projects and topics. You can categorize cloud resources via tags to simplify searching and aggregating resources. This topic describes tag features, usage instructions, and limitations.
Features overview
Growing cloud resources increase management complexity. The tag management feature provided by Volcano Engine can improve management efficiency. You can perform custom identification and categorized management to cloud service resources from various dimensions. For example, by using tags to classify and manage cloud resources according to different business categories, purposes, or usage objects. After binding tags to resources, you can quickly query and filter specific categories of cloud resources through tags.
TLS supports adding tags to projects and topics; supports managing resources from tag level. A tag consists of a key-value pair, including a tag key and a tag value. You can add multiple tags of different categories to each project or topic, such as module:http and city:guangzhou. Each tag can be associated with multiple cloud resources. For example, you can assign the same tag owner:zhangsan to two different log projects.
Use cases
We recommend that you use the tag management feature in the following scenarios:
  • Categorize cloud resources.
  • When managing a large number of cloud resources, it is difficult to identify and organize resources using only the project name. You can classify projects based on business scenarios and assign the same label to projects with similar business purposes. Once labels are set, you can quickly filter projects by specifying tag keys and tag values.
  • Billing and cost allocation.
  • If your business requires splitting costs by organization or department, you can manage cloud resources by tags. First assign the same tag to resources that belong to the same organization or department, and then allocate costs to each group when you settle the expenses.
Notice
  • You can add multiple tags to each cloud resource. However, each tag can only have one tag value per resource. For example, when adding the module tag to log project A, if you have already added the tag module:http, you must delete the module:http tag before adding the module:tcp tag.
  • Tag information is not shared across regions. For example, tags created in the China (Beijing) region are not visible in the China (Shanghai) region.
  • There is no limit to the total number of tags. However, each project or topic can be associated with up to 50 tags. For detailed tag configuration rules, see Tagging rules.
Example value
For example, a company created five log projects in Volcano Engine for payment, shopping cart, and points business modules. These projects serve users in Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai, and maintained by Zhang San, Li Ming, and Han Meimei. To simplify management, tags can be used to categorize resources.
In this case, design the following tags:

Tag key
Tag value
system
pay, shoppingcart, integral
city
beijing, guangzhou, shanghai
owner
zhangsan, liming, hanmeimei

In this case, you can set corresponding tags for each project:

Log project name
Log project tag
Project A
  • system: pay
  • city: beijing
  • owner: zhangsan
Log item B
  • system: pay
  • city: guangzhou
  • owner: liming
Log item C
  • system: shoppingcart
  • city: beijing
  • owner: liming
Project D
  • system: shoppingcart
  • city: shanghai
  • owner: hanmeimei
Project E
  • system: integral
  • city: beijing
  • owner: hanmeimei
