Data migration FAQ
Feature
What migration methods does TOS support?
TOS supports migrating data to TOS through Data Migration Service, Data Express Service, tools, APIs, and SDKs.
Billing
Which migration method works best for each scenario? How are migration costs calculated?
The following table describes the migration methods supported by TOS, as well as the recommended data volumes for each method.

Recommended data volume
Use cases

Migration costs
API or SDK
No limit (depending on your business needs)
Use an API or SDK when new data is generated daily and needs to be uploaded to TOS, such as when you need to regularly back up local data to the cloud.
  • With 1 Gbps of bandwidth, you can transfer approximately 8 TB of data daily. Migration time depends on the bandwidth and the volume of data.
  • For small files (less than 1 MB), estimate the migration time by dividing the total number of files by the number of objects processed per second.
  • Over the public network: Third-party cloud service providers or IDCs will charge you for outbound traffic. TOS will not charge you for inbound traffic.
  • Over the private network (ECS): Free.
  • TOS costs: TOS will charge you for storage and requests. For more information, see Requests and Data transfer.
  • Over a dedicated line: No additional costs except for the dedicated line charges.
tosutil or Rclone
0 to 100 TB
  • Use Rclone when the data to be migrated does not come from a third-party cloud service provider supported by Data Migration Service.
  • Use tosutil when data is stored in an Internet data center (IDC) or file system.
Data Migration Service or TOS Import
  • Public network: 0 to 500 TB
  • Dedicated line: No limit
  • Public network: Data is stored with a third-party cloud service provider or in an IDC. When stored in an IDC, over 1 Gbps of public network bandwidth is available for data migration.
  • For very large data volumes, consider using a dedicated line to avoid high transfer costs on the public network.
  • Dedicated line: Data is stored with a third-party cloud vendor or in an IDC, and a dedicated line is available. Using Data Migration Service offers the lowest cost and highest efficiency in this case.
  • With 1 Gbps of bandwidth, you can transfer approximately 8 TB of data daily. Migration time depends on the bandwidth and the volume of data.
  • For small files (less than 1 MB), estimate the migration time by dividing the total number of files by the number of objects processed per second.
During data migration, TOS will charge you for making API requests and uploading and downloading data. For billing details, see Requests and Data transfer. Data Migration Service does not charge additional fees.
Data Express Service
5 TB to 1 PB
Use Data Express Service when data is stored in an on-premise IDC with no dedicated connection to the cloud and limited public network outbound bandwidth.
For information on how long data copy takes, see Estimating data copy time.
Costs are based on the number of devices used and how long they are used for. For more information, see Billing overview.

Compatibility
What cloud service providers does Data Migration Service support?
It supports migrating data from the following third-party cloud service providers:
  • Alibaba Cloud
  • Tencent Cloud
  • Huawei Cloud
  • Qiniu Cloud
  • Kingsoft Cloud
  • Other S3-compatible storage: Any object storage solution that is compatible with the S3 protocol and supports AWS Signature Version 4.
  • Volcano Engine Torch Object Storage (TOS): Migrating data from one TOS bucket to another in the same region is supported.
