Use cases
As your business grows and your application data increases, you may need to extend your volume to give your ECS instance more storage without losing existing data. This topic explains how to extend a volume. This includes both system volumes and data volumes.
You can extend a volume online, which means your business will not be interrupted and you do not need to restart your instance.
Prerequisites
  • Both pay-as-you-go and subscription volumes are eligible for extension.
  • You can extend a data volume either offline or online. The instance to which the volume is attached must be in the "Running" or "Stopped" state.
  • Make sure there are no overdue payments on your account.
Notes
  • The maximum capacity varies depending on the volume type. For more information, see Volume specifications.
  • Billing for the volume is based on the new capacity after an extension.
  • The maximum size of an MBR partition is 2 TiB. To extend an MBR-formatted volume beyond 2 TiB, consider creating a new data volume, using the GPT partitioning scheme, and copying your existing data to it.
  • After a volume is extended, its size increases, but the additional space cannot be used directly. This applies to both "Available" and "Attached" volumes with existing partitions. You must log in to the instance and extend volume partitions and file systems manually.
  • You cannot attach or detach a volume that is in the "Extending" state. Complete these operations after the extension is finished.
